Overview

Good light can completely change a photograph. For travel and landscape photographers, the soft light around sunrise and sunset is especially rewarding, bringing out the colours, textures and character of a place.

Prawaha Tours and Travels’ 9-day Sunrise and Sunset Photography Tour takes you through some of Nepal’s most scenic and culturally rich destinations, including Kathmandu Valley, Bandipur and Pokhara. The itinerary is designed to give you plenty of opportunities to photograph landscapes, heritage sites, local communities and mountain scenery.

In Kathmandu Valley, explore four UNESCO World Heritage Sites, along with the hilltop destination of Nagarkot and the traditional Newari village of Khokana.

The journey then continues to Bandipur, where historic Newari architecture, local life and surrounding hills create a wonderful setting for photography. From Bandipur, travel towards Pokhara along the scenic Prithvi Highway.

In Pokhara, photograph the Himalayan landscape from Sarangkot, visit the World Peace Pagoda, and head towards Dhampus for closer views of the mountains and peaceful village surroundings. With a mix of sunrise and sunset sessions, cultural exploration and scenic locations, the tour offers a varied photography experience across Nepal.

Itinerary

Day 1 Arrival in Kathmandu

When you arrive at Tribhuvan International Airport, a representative from Prawaha Tours and Travels will welcome you and assist with your transfer to the hotel by private vehicle. After checking in and freshening up, we’ll have a short briefing about your photography tour, including the itinerary and important timings. The rest of the day is free for you to relax, explore nearby streets, or enjoy some time at your hotel before the tour begins.

Day 2 Kathmandu Heritage Sites and Nagarkot

Begin your day exploring three UNESCO World Heritage Sites: Kathmandu Durbar Square, Swayambhunath Stupa and Patan Durbar Square. Photograph historic temples, courtyards, monuments, religious shrines and lively local streets while discovering the valley’s rich Newari heritage. In the late afternoon, travel to Nagarkot and check into your hotel. End the day at Nagarkot View Tower, where you can capture the sunset and, on a clear evening, enjoy distant views of the Himalayan range.

Day 3 Nagarkot, Bhaktapur and Khokana

Start early at Nagarkot View Tower to photograph the sunrise and Himalayan horizon. After breakfast, head to Bhaktapur Durbar Square, where medieval temples, courtyards, traditional houses and pottery-filled streets offer excellent photography opportunities. Later, continue to Khokana, a historic Newari settlement known for its traditional architecture and local way of life. Visit the Shekala Mai Temple and wander through the village lanes to capture everyday scenes. End the day enjoying the peaceful countryside and surrounding hills.

Day 4 Kathmandu to Bandipur

Leave Kathmandu behind and travel by private vehicle towards Bandipur, enjoying scenic views along the Prithvi Highway. The journey passes rivers, terraced fields, hillside settlements and mountain landscapes before reaching this charming Newari hill town. After checking in and taking some time to rest, join a short photography review and discussion with your guide. In the evening, walk to Tudikhel to capture the sunset and Himalayan views, followed by a stroll along Bandipur’s historic stone-paved streets.

Day 5 Bandipur to Pokhara

Rise early for a hike to the Thani Mai Temple viewpoint on Gurungche Hill. The uphill walk is rewarding, especially at sunrise, with panoramic views of the Himalayas and Marsyangdi Valley below. Return to the hotel for breakfast before driving to Pokhara via Dumre and the Prithvi Highway. Once there, the rest of the day is free. Relax at your hotel, wander through lively Lakeside, or enjoy a peaceful boat ride on Phewa Lake.

Day 6 Sarangkot and World Peace Pagoda

Begin before sunrise with a drive to Sarangkot, one of Pokhara’s best viewpoints for capturing the first light over the Himalayas. On a clear morning, you may see Annapurna, Dhaulagiri, Machhapuchhre and Lamjung Himal. Return to the hotel for lunch before visiting the World Peace Pagoda on Anadu Hill. Enjoy views across Phewa Lake and the surrounding mountains, and stay for sunset before returning to your hotel.

Day 7 Drive to Dhampus and Sunset Photography

After breakfast, take a scenic drive from Pokhara to Dhampus, a traditional Gurung village surrounded by hills and mountain views. Spend the afternoon walking through the village, photographing stone houses, woodland, small tea gardens and local life. Your photography guide will also lead a short photo review and discussion session. As evening approaches, find a good viewpoint and capture the changing colours of the Himalayas as the sun sets behind the mountains.

Day 8 Dhampus Sunrise and Flight to Kathmandu

Wake before dawn and take a short uphill walk to Dhampus View Tower for sunrise over the Annapurna range, Machhapuchhre and Hiunchuli. Return to the village for breakfast before driving to Pokhara Airport for your flight to Kathmandu. After arriving, our team will transfer you to your hotel, where you can join a final photography review and discussion. Spend the evening exploring Thamel, browsing its colourful streets and picking up souvenirs before your departure.

Day 9 Farewell and Departure

After breakfast, your photography tour comes to an end. Our team will arrange a comfortable transfer to Tribhuvan International Airport, allowing you to reach the airport with plenty of time for your onward flight. We hope you leave Nepal with memorable experiences and plenty of great photographs.
